Viewing begins next Thursday and the auction takes place on Monday, August 3rd and Tuesday, August 4th. The venue is a marquee on Harbour Road and some 540 lots will go under the hammer.

Auctioneer Niall Dolan hopes to attract holidaymakers in Connemara and said it was the firm's "best auction for many years". Highlights include 48 paintings from a private collection in the west of Ireland that includes Lot 114 (pictured), Harry Kernoff's "quite important" The Mall, Castlebar (Co Mayo), estimated at €6,000 to €10,000; Lot 128, Early Light, Killary Harbour by Cecil Maguire (€3,500-€4,500); and, Lot 116, Twin Bays, Connemara by Arthur Armstrong (€2,500- €3,500).

The highest-estimated picture is Lot 99, a Jack B Yeats oil, Hobby Horses (painted in 1927), 23cm by 35.5cm in its original carved frame. It is estimated at €78,000-€85,000. But there are hundreds of affordable paintings, including dozens of Connemara scenes. For the catalogue, see dolansart.com.
