Tuesday (February 10th) Sotheby's, London. A large, abstract painting by German artist Gerhard Richter (aged 83) titled 'Abstraktes Bild', which was estimated at £14 million-£20 million (€19 million -€27 million), sold for £30.4 million (€41 million), the highest price on record for any European living artist [see photograph, right].
Wednesday (February 11th) Christie's, London. 'Study For A Head' by Francis Bacon – a 1955 oil-on-canvas abstract depiction of Pope Pius XII who reigned from 1939 until his death in 1958 – sold for £10 million (€13.5 million). The estimate had been "on request".
