Ingenious stacking pans
It's the handles and lids that make pot drawers, if you have them, such cluttered spaces. Tefal, the inventor of non-stick cookware, has now designed a range with detachable handles and glass lids that stack flat. The Ingenio range also comes with sturdy airtight plastic lids, so leftovers can be put straight into the fridge or freezer. One of the big advantages of the removable handles is that cooking processes can be started on a hob and continued in an oven. A 13-piece set including a variety of pans and a wok, plus glass and plastic lids and two handles, costs €304.99 at Arnotts, Dublin 1.
Say (homemade) cheese!
"Try some halloumi, I made it myself," has a nice ring to it, and now with the arrival of home cheese-making kits at Mr Middleton, you won't have to go to a Cypriot sheep farm to produce your own. The Big Cheese-Making Kits also come in ricotta, goat's cheese, mozzarella and Scottish crowdie. The rennet provided is vegetarian and all you'll need to add is milk (unhomogenised). The kits, €29.95, were developed by Scottish businesswoman Ailsa Proverbs , and each can be reused to make up to 10 batches or 20lbs of cheese. Set aside plenty of time for the multi-stage process – the halloumi will take a little over three hours to make and then should rest for a day. See mrmiddleton.com.
The Terroirs winner is...
The winner of the case of 12 bottles of organic wine, worth €350, in the Terroirs 20th birthday celebrations competition in our Winter Food & Wine magazine is Blandina O'Brien of Blackrock, Co Dublin. Terroirs is now stocking the comb honey made by Tony Lynch from nearby Nutley Avenue in Donnybrook, which was one of the Irish winners, taking the McCormick Cup, at the 83rd National Honey Show in Surrey earlier this month. The sections of comb cost €25.
