Aldi have a range of wines under the title ‘Exquisite Collection’ . I wouldn’t go quite that far, but some of the wines are very drinkable, and all are inexpensive. From the Limestone Coast, one of the lesser-known but highly-rated regions of Australia, this is an unoaked Chardonnay. It has very palatable fresh plump pear fruits, with plenty of zesty acidity to back it up. This would make a good summer glugger, to drink on its own, or with fish, chicken and salads.

Kaapzicht Estate Red 2011, Stellenbosch, South Africa

I featured the white Chenin Blanc from this producer last year; it is an excellent fruit-filled dry white and worth buying to go alongside this red. If you enjoy light, restrained and elegant red wines, look away now. The Kaapzicht Estate red, made from a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, is an intense experience. Full-bodied wine and rich with concentrated smooth mint and cassis fruits. It packs a fair punch; this would be ideal with barbequed red meats.
