The ambience at hairstylist Zara Cox’s new studio couldn’t be more different from the average salon, which, give or take the odd massage chair, seem to follow the same fit-out formula. Entering the bright bay windowed room, the calming shades and eclectic decor immediately tell you this is going to be a different, more intimate affair.

With more than 20 years experience working in Paris, London, Milan and New York, Cox has tended the tresses of models Sophie Dahl, Yasmin le Bon and designer Diane von Furstenberg, but having her own space has been a longtime dream. “I love the creativity and fun side of hairdressing, but my emphasis is always on customer care.” Her clients agree. With the paint barely dry on the new premises, Cox has already been nominated in our Best Shops Competition.

How to get what you want from your hairdresser “It should be all about you when you are visiting your hairdresser,” says Cox. “We love to talk hair.” Don’t be afraid to ask questions. “Make sure you have a consultation when your hair is dry and wear it as you would normally.”

She is a fan of clients bringing in photographs. “Pictures are a great starting point for your consultation.” She also advises a reality check when it comes to maintenance. “Be practical about the time you have or want to spend on your hair, and if you’re nervous, please tell us, it’s all part of building up confidence and the relationship.

"Feedback is also essential as we have no business without you [the customer]." Summer hair heros Summer means more relaxed styling so products such as Sebastian Potion 9 or Davines Sea Salt Spray are great. Hair powders are also great at this time of year for texture. Look for products with anti-humectants to battle frizz; they repel moisture and keep hair smoother for longer. I love Living Proof No Frizz. Zara Cox@29, 2nd floor, 29 Wicklow St, Dublin 2.
