The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s annual New Year’s Day concerts have pulled in TV viewership figures of more than one billion – and the seasonal demand for Viennese music is even greater than that figure might suggest. Witness the long-running series of Viennese concerts from the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin.

This year’s offerings both feature Irish sopranos. Helen Kearns (above, left) is the soloist in the NSO’s two programmes under Christopher Warren-Green on New Year’s Day.

Celine Byrne (right) teams up with the Ulster Orchestra under Christopher Bell for a tour that will take in Derry (Wednesday), Omagh (Thursday), two nights at the Waterfront in Belfast (Friday 8th and Saturday 9th, when dancers Camilla Dallerup and Ian Waite join in the fun).
