Brendan O'Carroll's Mrs Brown's Boys won the award for best comedy at last night's National Television Awards in London.

The Dublin comedian thanked the audience following his latest award for the show that has gone from strength to strength.

“Thank you so much for voting. It looks like our threats paid off,” he joked at the ceremony which was presented by Dermot O’Leary at the city’s O2 venue.

“You have been so generous to us. We just wanted to make a comedy show that would make people laugh and we didn’t expect everything that’s coming out of that.

“Thanks so much to the voting public and thanks so much to the 15 million on Christmas Day. I love you.”

It is the latest success for O’Carroll’s show after he won a Bafta award in 2012 for Best Situation Comedy.

Such was the success on foot of his various awards, that his company, Mrs Brown's Boys Ltd, recorded profits of just over €1 million in 2012, having risen from €250,000 in 2011.

Last year the Christmas Special episode of the popular comedy was the most watched television programme in Ireland and Britain with 9.4 million people tuning in.
