“Dear, dear! How queer everything is to-day!” says Alice when Wonderland has taken a change for the smaller. She may have a point. But while gay culture has been either co-opted by the mainstream or misrepresented by easy cliches, the Queer aspect is something beyond sexuality or pose. It is fun. It is alternative. It is performance. And, like all those things, it mainly comes out at night.

For the first curated arts festival in Dublin's Lesbian and Gay Pride celebrations, Calipo Theatre Company and thisispopbaby provide a kaleidoscope of politics, provocations and pleasures. Phillip McMahon's All Over Town(June 22nd-27th) gets a new production while Una McKevitt debuts her documentary theatre piece, Victor and Gord(June 24th and 25th). There is a misty possibility you can still get tickets for her highness Panti's new drag show, A Woman in Progress, the legendary agent provocateur David Hoyle's This is My Fucking Truth, or neo-cabaret superstars Bourgeois and Maurice. Hotly tipped too is Niall Sweeney's performance-

lecture on Alternative Miss Ireland, aka “Gay Christmas”. More special events than specialist event, Queer Notions essentially asks a stimulating and endlessly playful question, one that Alice knew well. “Who in the world am I? Ah, thats the great puzzle!”
