There’s a lot of fascinating new-school jazz taking shape across the Irish Sea at present and you’ll find saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings’s name popping up a lot in this context.

A member of Sons of Kemet and Melt Yourself Down and others, Hutchings is also right in the heart of the action with The Comet Is Coming, a London-based trio firing up thrilling cosmic jazz-dance sounds.

What's commendable about Channel the Spirits is how Hutchings, drummer Maxwell Hallett and keyboardist Dan Leavers pull together so many disparate elements without making a dog's dinner of the final blend.

Tracks like Space Carnival and New Age pack a powerful punch with Afrobeat wig-outs, post-punk panache, slo-mo dub and a dozen other examples of sonic derring-do.
