Los Angeles-based indy label Resonance has unearthed some lustrous gems since 2008 – notably last year's Offering from John Coltrane – but All My Yesterdays may well be the crown jewel.
Label founder George Klabin was in the Village Vanguard with his microphones the night in 1966 when Thad Jones and Mel Lewis debuted their legendary big band.
Fifty years later, that weekly session is still going strong, and this two- CD set, with copious notes and interviews, is a fitting tribute to a great New York institution.
For appreciators of the big-band tradition, it’s like the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the joyous, liberated music sounds as fresh as it did 50 years ago.
