Imagine Frank Zappa, Charles Mingus and Rage Against the Machine meeting in a dark, absurdist alley and you have some idea where Belfast art rockers Robocobra are coming from. Robocobra Quartet is led by drummer-vocalist Chris Ryan and formed by ex-students of the city's Sonic Arts Research Centre. Their sound blends jazz, improv and experimental music with hardcore punk, agit-prop spoken-word and snatches of other musical flavours.
If this nine-piece quartet of Situationists have a message, it is not exactly explicit, but the music on this brief (25 minutes) debut is startling, fresh-sounding and fully committed.
And when the drums start to groove and the saxophones start to blow, there is no doubt that Robocobra believe in liberation through music. robocobraquartet.com
