When Peter Gabriel left Genesis at the height of their pomp in 1975, fans thought he really was as mad as his onstage persona suggested.
But Gabriel had his sights set on a world beyond prog-rock, and his first four solo albums, all sharing the same eponymous title, marked him out as a true adventurer.
Each album has been half-speed remastered on double vinyl, so now you can get the full range of Gabriel’s singular vision.
LP one features the spell-weaving Solsbury Hill and the creepy Moribund the Burgermeiser. LP2 features DIY, his paean to the punk spirit, along with lots of luverly Frippertronics from producer Robert Fripp.
The third album is the real gem here, with Games Without Frontiers (Kate Bush's backing vocals are crystal clear), I Don't Recall, the anti-Apartheid anthem Biko, and the razor-edged power of And Through the Wire.
