The Dublin-based arts collective Nighthawks is once more spreading its wings. The monthly club night, Nighthawks at the Cobalt, has been run by Stephen Kennedy and friends since January 2009, and hosts music, comedy, theatre, poetry and dance in the intimate confines of Dublin’s Cobalt Cafe.
This has been a big year for the collective. In recent months they have curated a stage at the Flat Lake festival in Co Monaghan, and raised thousands of euro for Oxfam Ireland through two compilations and two benefit gigs. Their latest venture is a special one-off radio programme, which will be broadcast on RTÉ’s Arena on Christmas Eve. The line-up of guests has yet to be confirmed, but Kennedy said a “big name” is involved, and it would be “the perfect way to round-off what has been a brilliant year for Nighthawks”. There have been previous collaborations between Arena (weekdays from 7pm on RTÉ Radio 1) and Nighthawks, notably their live sessions and various takeovers.
In addition, the Nighthawks club night – which has sold out every time this year – returns to its North Great George’s Street home on November 20th. Túcan provides the musical entertainment, and there will be comedy from Paul Tylak, performance poetry from Dave Lordan, and more. Tickets are €12.50 and available exclusively from City Discs.
