"Greys are a loud rock band from Toronto" – the no-frills press release is characteristic of this young quartet. Greys' debut album sounds so rough and ready in parts that it's like they were only recently evicted from their parents' garage. Some songs, such as the grungy, atonal Flip Yr Lid, sound like the result of a decade-long aural percolation in Nirvana's back catalogue. Adderall, Pretty Grim and Guy Picciotto are all thrashy, punky blasts of distilled energy, while the humorous refrain of Chick Singer ("She's good for a girl") demonstrates that Greys aren't po-faced, posturing punks. Cold Soak and Lull leave you room to catch your breath, but the calm moments are generally infrequent. If Anything is a short, squally, thrashy, jubilantly and unquestionably loud rock record. greys.bandcamp.com
