Singers have always dominated the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s New Year’s Day concerts. But this year’s soloist is a pianist, Finghin Collins (right), who will reach back beyond the favourite 19th-century waltzes, and offer Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 25 in C, K503.

Collins, the NSO’s associate artist, is engaged on a three-year survey of Mozart’s piano concertos. The conductor is Christopher Warren-Green, who’s been one of the busiest conductors of the Strauss family in Ireland for more than 10 years.

Saturday’s afternoon and early evening concerts open with a suite of waltzes from Richard Strauss’s Rosenkavalier and run to a clutch of Johann Strauss favourites, which include the Emperor and Blue Danube Waltzes.
