Influential session guitarist Marc Ribot delights in being uncategorisable. His savagely loud and often discordant trio (with bassist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Ches Smith) will certainly have the jazz police scratching their heads and wondering how this particular mongrel got under the fence – he even sings, for goodness sake, and not about nice things like princes and valentines ! But for those raised on loud guitars and snarled social criticism, Ceramic Dog is a welcome blast of cold, witheringly sarcastic air. Think John Zorn meets Frank Zappa meets New York Dolls meets Beastie Boys and you're whistling past the right graveyard. If you need a category, call it post-punk jazz for the thinking person who doesn't think much of categories. marcribot.com
