Pianist Bill Evans casts a long shadow. More than half a century after his groundbreaking recordings introduced a new language to jazz, Evans’s influence may still be discerned in pianists from every generation, and homages to him like this one from pianist Bruno Heinen are not uncommon.
The London-based pianist pays his respects with Danish guitarist Kristian Borring (an overt reference to Evans's epochal collaborations with guitarist Jim Hall) and the pair treat classic Evans originals like Time Remembered, 34 Skidoo and Show Type Tune with appropriate reverence.
The restrained, chamber quality of the music will be balm to many a weary ear, but for most, the effect of a recording like this will be to send the listener back to the still unmatched source material.
