Auricolae are a storytelling and music troupe who openly describe themselves as a "stealth" new music group. In other words, they're a small-scale enterprise – voices, violin, viola and cello – on the same lines as Peter and the Wolf or the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. There's no educational palaver about introducing instruments, and no intention of emulating the artistic level of Prokofiev or Britten. The focus is clearly on the storytelling, with American accents and lots of Yiddish words. The music is incidental, illustrative, with lots of opportunities for dissonant, clashing sounds, all intended for performance in schools with no previous exposure to classical music. It's a matter of appealing narratives, cleverly wrapped in contemporary sounds. Or should that be the other way around? url.ie/e8oo
