Friedrich Witt (1770-1836) is the composer of a Symphony in C that turned up in Jena in 1909 as a set of parts lacking a title page, but with attributions to Beethoven on two of the parts. The work known as Beethoven's JenaSymphony was eventually attributed to Witt in the late 1950s after the discovery of a second, complete set of parts. Haydn's Symphony No 97 has been suggested as a clear model for the work, which was always believed to predate Beethoven's First Symphony by some five years. As the indisputable work of Witt, it has disappeared from the repertoire. Patrick Gallois's new performance usefully couples it with Witt's earlier and more attractive Symphony in A. Both are nicely done by the Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä;
but Gallois’s playing of the later Flute Concerto in G sounds too effortful. See url.ie/57c6
