An instrumental concept album inspired by the Greek garage rock scene of the 1960s and 1970s? If nothing else, it’s original. The debut album by Andy Dragazis follows the fictional story of The Scantharies, a band influenced by The Beatles’ “mystical” period. This collection is pitched as a Best Of, taking in the fuzzy shuffle of their early material to their supposedly experimental conclusion. While the former element is ably covered in the sharp, scratchy clatter of the opening brace, the latter never really blossoms.

Berlin hints at psychedelia but doesn't fully commit, while the pervasive wobble of Hammond organ on several tracks only casts a homogenous camouflage over the album's middle section. There's much to enjoy here, but the sense that it's missing a key ingredient is indisputable. thescantharies.com
