SubjektEdition ****
Inter-generational bands used to be the norm in jazz but, increasingly, jazz school neophytes are forming bands among themselves, thus missing out on the wisdom – musical and otherwise – that passes from one generation to another on the bandstand. Neon Quartet buck that trend, matching veteran saxophonist Stan Sulzman with three of the UK’s most impressive young musicians: vibra- phonist Jim Hart, drummer Tim Giles and pianist Kit Downes.
The results are just as new and exciting as any of the "boybands", but there's an unusual warmth and honesty in their sound, the vibes, keys and drums providing a taut rhythmic platform for Sulzman's joyously liberated playing. Hart, Downes and Sulzman each contribute interesting compositions, making for a coherent, original sound that will appeal to young and old alike.
