King Creosote & Jon Hopkins

Diamond Mine: Special Edition Double Six ****

Diamond Mine: Special EditionDouble Six ****

A year after Diamond Mine was released comes this "Special Edition", which sees the album enhanced by six tracks culled from EPs, B-sides and new material. The original mixed Scottish singer-songwriter King Creosote's pithy, punchy words and intonations with Jon Hopkins' found sounds and soothing electronica. The new tracks further confirm the record as one of a kind; King Creosote (aka Fife's Kenny Anderson) delivers the sort of off-the-grid folk that brings to mind Ivor Cutler's surreal kitchen-sink docudramas – the B-side track Missionary is bathed in a bemused ruefulness that rings true. Meanwhile, the addition and placing (at the end) of instrumental track Starboard Home now gives the record a perfect symmetry that wasn't there on the original. Still beautiful but even better. How'd they do that? jonhopkins.co.uk
