A Turn in the Dream-Songs Rough Trade***
Thanks to his lo-fi aesthetic and stream-of-consciousness lyrics, Jeffrey Lewis has polarised as many people as he has charmed over the course of 14 years. The New Yorker is fully aware of that fact, addressing his position on the margins of celebrity on the droll Cult Boyfriend. It's that tongue-in- cheek trait of the singer's simplistic anti-folk sound that makes his sixth album for Rough Trade so appealing. Yet similarly, Lewis's tendency to ramble is his downfall. The longer songs here ( Krongu Green Slime, Water Leaking, Water Moving) err on the side of tedium, despite the quality of their analogue recordings and the album's various guest musicians. Perhaps not for everyone, but then again, Lewis's albums never are.
