Gregory and the Hawk

Hi-tech studios and pioneering recording techniques aren't devices that factor into Meredith Godreau's music- making methodology; the woman that operates under the Gregory and the Hawk pseudonym likes things done as primitively as possible. That's not to say that her third album is without its charms. Over and Overand For the Bestare immediate standouts, the latter's subtle melody unfurling via a range of instruments. The lo-fi crackle of A Century Is All We Needand the gentle expansion of Geysir Nationalepluck and strum their way into your affections upon repeated listens, Godreau's wispy vocals akin to our own Cathy Davey's. Yet Leche's rickety allure is also its downfall: a half-finished record in essence, these songs ultimately instigate more frustration than enjoyment.
