Lenny Abrahamson's Room, Simon Fitzmaurice's My Name is Emily, John Carney's Sing Street and Galway based Irish language drama An Klondike are set to sweep the board at the 2016 Irish Film and Television Awards (Iftas) following the announcement of nominees on Monday morning.
Oscar contenders Room and Brooklyn feature prominently in the nominations, tying with Sing Street and My Name is Emily, on eight nods.
The awards, which are now in their 13th year, will take place at the Round Room of the Mansion House on Saturday, April 9th.
Brooklyn, Viva and The Survivalist will join My Name is Emily, Room and Sing Street in the race to nab the title of best film at the awards ceremony next month.
Liam Neeson will also attend this year’s event to accept an award in recognition of his “outstanding contribution to cinema”, while actress and producer Roma Downey is set to receive the inaugural Irish Diaspora Award.
Following on from the Academy Award shortlist, Saoirse Ronan and Michael Fassbender and nominated for Steve Jobs and Brooklyn respectively. Fassbender will compete with Colin Farrell (The Lobster), Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina), Barry Keoghan (Mammal) and Martin McCann (The Survivalist). Roana will face competition from Ruth Bradley (Pursuit), Eva Birthistle (Swansong), Evanna Lynch (My Name Is Emily) and Orla Brady (The Price of Desire).
Ruth Bradley is also nominated for her roll in TV series Rebellion which has received eight nominations overall.
Lenny Abrahamson, fresh from his win at last night's Canadian Screen Awards – where Room scooped nine gongs including Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Actor for young Jacob Tremblay – has been nominated for Best Director against John Carney (Sing Street), John Crowley (Brooklyn), Paddy Breathnach (Viva) and Stephen Fingleton (The Survivalist).
