Grumbles persist about the Edinburgh Film Festival’s decision to move from August (where it shared space with the main arts jamboree) to empty space in mid-June.

This year the festival waited until two weeks before the event begins to announce the programme. The general feeling was that the organisers had to allow the smoke to clear around Cannes before completing deliberations.

At any rate, the event, which runs from June 16th to June 27th, boasts the usual blend of eccentric and mainstream films. Premieres include Werner Herzog's My Son, My Son, What Have You done?; Floria Sigismondi's The Runaways; Koji Wakamatsu's Caterpillar;and the one that pipped T he White Ribbonand A Prophetto the Oscar for best foreign-language picture, Juan José Campanella's The Secret in Their Eyes. The big Hollywood beast will be Toy Story 3.

Irish interest is provided by the premiere of SoulBoy. Set in the world of 1970s Northern Soul, Shimmy Marcus's film has already picked up some serious buzz.
