Fassbender does his Jobs in a polo

At last, a trailer has emerged for the Steve Jobs film, stylised as steve jobs. While this would previously have earned the anticipation worthy of a trumped-up Apple product release, the dawn of the trailer was more iPad Mini than iPhone6.

Part of the slightly deflated reaction to this first look at the film – starring The Fassbender as Jobs, written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Danny Boyle – is that the production has had more bugs than the first iOS update. Sorkin wanted Tom Cruise, who is pretty used to speaking on large stages in front of fanatics in polo necks, but no dice. Boyle wanted Leo so they could reenact their time making The Beach, but it wasn’t to be. This was actually originally a Sony project, but Universal ended up taking over.

The most intriguing part of this film has always been the rumoured script structure by Sorkin. Apparently, the thing is divided in three parts, examining Jobs before three key Apple product launches. But the film has been so long in development that even Ashton Kutcher had an opportunity to make a movie about Jobs in the meantime.

What kind of Sorkin script will we get? Swashbuckling The West Wing, whiplash-smart The Social Network, or schmalzy The Newsroom? We’ll find out in October.

And although movies beset with production “issues” tend to raise red flags about the quality, we have faith in this one being something at least above average. And it turns out that Fassbender (as Steve Jobs, above) really works that black turtleneck.
