Belated sequels have a messy history. For every Before Sunsetthere's a Godfather Part III, an Escape from LAand a The Two Jakes.

Fans of Trainspotting could, therefore, be forgiven for delivering only muted applause at the news that Danny Boyle is keen on developing a sequel. In a recent interview, the director admitted he was keen on talking to the original cast about a loose adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s book

Porno.

“It will happen, I think,” said Boyle. “I mean, we’ll approach them all again about it, but it will depend on what place they’re all at.”

Welsh might not be so happy at hearing the director’s assessment of his attempt to address the characters’ later lives: “The book

Porno

is not a great book in the way that the original novel is genuinely a masterpiece. But we have been doing some work on it, and it’s got potential.”

Yikes! “Potential?” Now that’s what I call damning with faint praise.
