President Michael D Higgins has spoken of the importance of journeying through life "with curiosity" as he received a copy of a new book celebrating The Irish Times "Unthinkable" philosophy column.

Unthinkable: Great Ideas for Now by Joe Humphreys includes contributions from Mr Higgins and a number of participants in the President's year-long Ethics Initiative, combined with other Irish and international philosophers.

"Joe Humphreys has made a wonderful contribution to the public world with his book Unthinkable: Great Ideas for Now. What a great read it would make if philosophy makes it on to the curriculum," the President said.

“Not only have 70 working thinkers contributed views on the most important questions facing us in our lives together, but we have quotes from the greatest philosophers which would justify the book on their own as a reference source.

“Beautifully designed, it will be a lovely portable and accessible book not only for students but those doing their best to think their way through life with curiosity.”

Mr Higgins was speaking as he and his wife Sabina received the author and his family and book designer Dearbhla Kelly at Áras an Uachtaráin for a presentation of the book.
