Man arrested as gardaí investigate fatal assault in Co Kildare

Victim (50s) found dead following violent assault where he received apparent stab injuries at residential property in Kilcock

Gardaí are expected to begin a murder investigation following a suspected violent assault on a man in Kilcock, Co Kildare.

The man’s body was discovered at a residential property on School Street in the town on Thursday. It is believed the fatal assault occurred between 3pm and 4pm.

The man, who was in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s body remained on site pending technical and forensic inquiries. It is understood the man suffered apparent stab injuries.

A postmortem examination is due to be carried out by State Pathologist Sally Ann Collis in the mortuary of Naas General Hospital on Friday morning, which will seek to determine the exact cause of death.

A man (40s) who was present at the scene at the time has been detained by gardaí for questioning. Gardaí are not searching for anyone else.

Investigating gardaí are expected to carry out door-to-door inquiries to try to establish what may have happened in the run up to the fatal assault.

Gardaí are also appealing for any witnesses who were in the School Street area of the town between 3pm and 4pm, or motorists who may have camera or dashcam footage, to come forward.
