When Apple announced its MacBooks last week, we got not one but two new custom-designed chips to power them, the M1 Pro and the M1 Max. Both offer significantly more power even over Apple's own M1 chip, but the M1 Max is the star of the show. It powers the 14 and 16 inch MacBooks, offering more power but with greater efficiency so you can get up to 14 hours of battery on the 14 inch device and 21 hours on the larger 16 inch MacBook out of a full charge. The new MacBook also trims down the frame, and – somewhat controversially – adds a notch to the screen for the improved front-facing camera.
The new MacBook Pro also brings back some ports – the dedicated MagSafe charging port, the extra USB connections, an HDMI port and a slot for secure digital – after previously trying to convince us that less is more. You can get up to 8TB in storage and and 32GB of RAM, depending on how deep your pockets are.
