Mobile operator Meteor has said that it has abolished roaming charges for subscribers travelling in the European Union.

Under the new arrangement Meteor customers now pay the same for calls and texts while abroad in the as they do at home in Ireland.

Prepay customers will be charged 29c per minute to make a call and 12c to send a text. Billpay subscribers will pay 25c per minute for a call and 10c for a text.

The revised charges also apply to calls made and received while in Norway and Iceland, which are both outside of the European Union.

Meteor estimates that its subscribers will now have a saving of up to 47 per cent compared to standard EU roaming rates and over 60 per cent against roaming charges offered by rivals Vodafone and O2.

The operator’s No Roaming Charges in Europe option is available to new and existing customers.
