Denis O’Brien’s mobile phone group Digicel recorded double-digit increases in its revenues and earnings in the first half of its financial year.
Results published yesterday show that revenues rose by 11 per cent to $1.38 billion in the six months to the end of September.
Its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) increased by 10 per cent to $577 million.
Digicel said the second quarter – July to September – contributed $295 million in Ebitda.
The company’s subscriber numbers rose by 17 per cent year on year to 12.9 million across the 30 markets in which it operates.
Digicel said revenue growth in the first half of its financial year was particularly strong in Haiti, Papua New Guinea, Trinidad Tobago and Suriname.
Revenues from value-added services like web browsing and messaging were up 37 per cent year on year and now account for 21 per cent of its overall revenues, the company added.
In a statement, Digicel’s group chief executive Colm Delves said he was “pleased” with the results, its “continued growth” and “customer response” to the roll-out of 4G services. “We will continue to focus our investments on countries where the appropriate foreign direct investment environment exists and where we see future growth opportunities,” Mr Delves added.
