The news that Aer Lingus could cut up to 1,700 jobs was greeted with shock in the Swords area, where the company has traditionally been one of the biggest employers.

The chief executive of the Swords Fingal Chamber of Commerce, Mr Tony Lambert, said the job losses would have a "profound impact" on local families. The Chamber, which represents over 250 businesses, last night called on the Government to provide whatever resources were necessary to support and maintain employment after the airline's announcement. Chamber president Mr Pat McNamara said Dublin Airport was the largest single economic unit in Ireland and was central to the continued development of the area. "Dublin Airport is recognized as the jewel in the crown of Fingal and is the bedrock on which the region has grown and prospered," he said.
