Will golfer Pádraig Harrington be competing in this weekend's US Masters tournament wearing items from his Dunnes Stores range? Harrington stands out as a genial, fair-minded sort of chap. I wonder what he makes of the recent Dunnes strike and the retailer's policy of keeping many of its workers on low-hours contracts?
Meanwhile, on a more charitable note, the financial results for the McGinley Foundation, the philanthropic body founded by former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, were filed in the UK this week. For the year to the end of last June, the McGinley Foundation made donations and gifts of £230,000. The accounts don’t cover the period when McGinley led Europe to Ryder Cup glory last September.
The foundation has in the past supported such noble causes as the St Vincent de Paul, the homelessness charity Amber, and CLIC Sargent, which helps young people with cancer. In addition to its donations, it held a further £190,000 in its bank account, which will no doubt be put to further good use.
