Irish firm Cubic Telecom has signed a deal with Australian retailer Woolworths to offer international roaming services to travellers.
The firm’s service will save Australian mobile users up to 90 per cent off what the standard phone operators charge for using their phones while abroad.
Woolworths Mobile, a mobile virtual network operator, is selling the SIM card under the Global Roaming SIM brand through its near 900 stores and catalogue that goes to several million homes.
Cubic Telecom sales director Kieran Sexton said the deal was Cubic’s largest to date. Cubic took part in a tender process to win the contract.
“It’s a very good market for us,” he said. “There are more than 22 million Australians, and a large number travel every year.”
Roaming fees charged by Australian “tier one” operators are among the highest in the world and can be as much as $15 per megabyte of data, said Mr Sexton, while calls can incur charges of up to $6 a minute. The Global Roaming SIM could cut those charges to 18c per minute.
