MIGHT RTÉ be considering the “Karen Koster” model for clothing its presenters in future? The host of TV3’s Xposé has her wardrobe sponsored by fashion chain Karen Millen in a deal that is mutually beneficial.

With any and every cost now under the spotlight at RTÉ, a draft code of practice has reportedly hinted that on-screen clothing allowances will be among the outlays targeted.

The total wardrobe spend by the broadcaster fell substantially last year, with the 2010 outlay of €280,777 dropping to €226,595 in 2011.

This doesn’t include the spend of programmes commissioned from independent producers. Television news reporters are understood to receive a standard annual clothing allowance, which must come as some comfort when their winter coats are battered by sleet during live links for Six One News.

These may now fall by the wayside. Any sponsorships though are likely to have to remain outside public service departments such as news and current affairs.

Station bosses will be aware of the fuss when the Daily Mail counted the number of BBC reporters wearing North Face and Berghaus brands, forcing the BBC to deny any commercial relationships.
