INDEPENDENT NEWS & Media (IN&M) has appointed public affairs executive Karl Brophy to the new role of director of corporate affairs and content development.

Mr Brophy will join the IN&M’s group executive committee in January.

Most recently, Mr Brophy was a partner at public affairs consultancy Hume Brophy, which has offices in Brussels, London and Dublin.

He will manage IN&M’s internal and external communications and will also be involved in the development of the media group’s content strategies.

A journalist by training, Mr Brophy was editor of South Africas Daily Voice– an IN&M title – from 2005 to 2007.

IN&M yesterday said he “conceived” the concept for the paper and was appointed to lead the project before its launch.

It went on to become the largest selling title in the region and had 500,000 readers a day.

Mr Brophy was also previously associate editor of the Cape Argus in South Africa for IN&M and political correspondent of the Irish Independent.

In addition, he has worked for the Irish Examinerand the Irish Daily Mirrorand was formerly a press officer for Fine Gael in both government and opposition.
