INDEPENDENT NEWS & Media has reorganised its three printing and production plants in Ireland into a single all-island entity to achieve "significant cost efficiencies".

IN&M said yesterday that its three plants, at Citywest in Dublin, Newry and Belfast, would now be managed as a "single, combined entity".

It is not clear if there will be any redundancies sought among the 250 people employed at the three printing plants.

The new entity will be managed by Brendan Elebert, currently production director at the Citywest facility. Kieran Matthews, assistant managing director of the Belfast Telegraph, will expand his role to assist in managing the new combined print and production operation.

Commenting on the move, IN&M's group chief operating officer, Vincent Crowley, said: "Managing the three plants as one unit will deliver significant efficiencies, improved time to market for our customers, as well as combining best-practice production techniques from each of the facilities."

IN&M is the largest commercial newspaper printer in Ireland. In recent times, the company has invested £50 million (€56.5 million) in the Belfast and Newry print operations. These plants print the Irish Daily Star, Sunday Worldand Sunday Tribune.
