The Aviva Stadium is going green. Under a new deal with SSE Airtricity, the arena's power supply is to come solely from renewable energy sources.
By removing its carbon footprint, the stadium says it is saving the environment nearly 3,000 tonnes in annual emissions, equivalent to the carbon stored by 22 acres of mature rainforest.
The switch also makes the Aviva the only stadium in the RBS Six Nations championship to be powered solely by clean energy.
"At Aviva Stadium, the jerseys, the seats and the pitch have always been green - now, by switching to SSE Airtricity, the energy at the stadium becomes 100 per cent green," head of business energy at SSE Airtricity Stephen Gallagher said.
Aviva Stadium director Martin Murphy said the move "reaffirms our commitment towards putting sustainability at the heart of everything we do, including in our energy use and environmental policies."
Ireland’s 2020 renewable energy targets commit the State to sourcing 40 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources, such as wind.
