ANGLO IRISH Bank has yet to make an external appointment to its executive management team six months on from the Government’s decision to nationalise the bank.

The recruitment process to find an external chief executive and an external chief risk officer has been under way for several months, though appointments to both positions are not thought to be imminent.

Donal O’Connor, a non-executive director of the bank who took charge of the bank as executive chairman in the absence of a chief executive, told an Oireachtas committee last month that the bank needed “a chief executive, a chief risk officer, a chief financial officer, a head of group lending, a head of group treasury, a head of operations and a head of finance.

“All of these jobs are in play. We have definitely said we will have an external chief executive and an external chief risk officer, but some of the other jobs will be filled externally,” he said.

A spokeswoman for the bank declined to comment on the progress of the appointments.

The position of chief risk officer is being filled on an acting basis by Peter Butler, the former managing director of the bank’s wealth management division, who has held his position since last January.

The management team at Anglo Irish comprises long-serving managers at the bank, including chief operating officer and a director Declan Quilligan; director of group finance Matt Moran; and Pat Whelan, head of Irish lending at the bank who oversaw development lending in the Republic.

Mr Whelan stepped down as a director of the bank in February.

Other members of the management team include John Bowe, head of treasury; Fiachre O’Neill, head of tax and compliance; Aidan Long, head of operations and retail funding; Tony Campbell, head of US operations; and head of human resources Seán Fitzpatrick, who is not related to the bank’s former chairman.
