Tierney in for injured Stringer

Peter Stringer is out of the Munster team for tomorrow evening's game against a Rest of Ireland selection at Thomond Park

Peter Stringer is out of the Munster team for tomorrow evening's game against a Rest of Ireland selection at Thomond Park. The Irish international scrumhalf is receiving intensive physiotherapy for a leg injury he received while playing for Shannon against Blackrock in an AIB League Division One game at Stradbrook last Wednesday week.

While he suffered no broken bones there was some ligament damage and therefore the Munster team management felt it unwise that Stringer should risk aggravating the injury just eight days before the province play their Heineken European Cup semi-final against Stade Francais in Lille. Coach Declan Kidney is monitoring the player's progress but the prognosis is he will be available for Lille.

He is replaced by former international and current Garryowen captain Tom Tierney while there is a call-up for Young Munster's Mike Prendergast; he joins the Munster squad for the first time this season. Prendergast has only just recovered from injury. There was better news for Kidney with regard to the other walking wounded.

Dominic Crotty has been cleared to take his place at full back after initially damaging and then exacerbating a rib problem. Left-wing Anthony Horgan made an impressive return following injury in Cork Constitution's victory over Galwegians at the weekend. Ronan O'Gara's bruised hip has healed sufficiently to allow him participate.

John Hayes (bruised shoulder) and Mick Galwey (leg infection), both of whom were sidelined at the weekend, have been named in the team as has Shannon colleague and number eight Anthony Foley, passed fit following knee ligament damage. Cork Constitution's Donnacha O'Callaghan replaces broken-thumb victim Alan Quinlan at blindside flanker.

David Wallace's absence and the late arrival of Dion O'Cuinneagain to Ireland poses a selection teaser for which Kidney and his assistant Niall O'Donovan do not as yet have an answer. O'Cuinneagain arrives in Limerick tomorrow from South Africa - a 10-hour flight that arrives at lunchtime - where he has been based since resuming his medical studies.

Depending on his physical condition, O'Cuinneagain will be asked to play some part in the game. Kidney will make a decision as to whether the former Ireland captain, O'Cuinneagain, Cork Con's Jerry Murray or Colm McMahon of Shannon will start the match. The two that are not chosen will join the replacements.

The Munster squad will return to their respective homes for Easter before coming together again on Wednesday of next week, 24 hours before they fly out to Lille on Thursday lunchtime.
