Neutrality and national defence

An open door

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – In his letter (November 25th), Eoin Ó Murchú finds fault with Keir Giles’s analysis of the security situation in western Europe (“If Russia is indeed planning an attack against a Nato state, distance and neutrality will provide no defence”, Opinion & Analysis, November 23rd).

Mr Giles did not explicitly state that countries such as Ireland should be members of Nato. Rather, he expressed the view that western countries, distant from the fighting in Ukraine, were not taking their national defence seriously and were effectively providing Russia with an open door that compromises European security.

Few could argue with that as far as Ireland is concerned. – Yours, etc,

KEVIN BUTLER,
