New guidelines on the establishment and operation of secondary school student councils were announced today by the outgoing Minister for Education, Dr Michael Woods.
Launching the guidelines, Dr Woods said: "Students have a voice and a contribution to make to their school. It is important that they be given the opportunity to express their views on issues of concern to them in the school.
"Participation in a student council will give students a heightened sense of ownership and pride in their school. It will also enhance their education and personal development," said Dr Woods.
Student councils were provided for in the Education Act 1998. Their role is to promote the interests of the school and the involvement of students in the affairs of the school in co-operation with the board of management, parents and teachers.
Dr Woods said the guidelines will give practical guidance and advice to management, teachers and students in setting up and running a student council.
