Catholics around the world will be able to keep up-to-date with the comings and goings of the Pope online following the launch of a dedicated Vatican channel on YouTube.

The channel, which began airing today will broadcast short video news clips updated daily on the Pope's activities and what's happening at the Vatican, with audio and text in English, Spanish, German and Italian.

The video clips will be up to two minutes long and are to be updated every day with footage provided by the Vatican Television Centre (CTV) in conjunction with journalists and the web team of Vatican Radio (RV).

Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Press Room, Television Centre and Vatican Radio, said the launch of the Vatican Channel was an example of the Church's commitment to use technology to reach out to a global audience.

The channel made its debut during a press conference at the press room of the Holy See, in Rome this morning.

At its launch, the channel contains a number of clips including one in which Pope Benedict discusses new technologies in social communication, the theme he chose for this year’s Catholic Church World Social Communication Day.

The Vatican channel can be found at www.youtube.com/vatican
