Gardaí and officials from the Department of Agriculture are today expected to continue raids on farms searching for smuggled livestock.

In Co Tipperary there have been 120 animals found without proper identification tags in the last month.

The Garda Criminal Assets Bureau has issued a tax demand thought to be around £300,000 on Mr John Walsh who imported sheep from an area of Scotland where FMD occured.

Mr Walsh's activities prior to the first outbreak of the disease at a farm in Meigh, Co Armagh, are being investigated by the Garda, RUC and British police.

The Irish Cattle Traders' and Stockowners' Association (ICSA) said smuggling can be combatted using simple deskwork. ICSA president Mr Charlie Reilly said: "As the Department has access to all registration information, there is no reason why they cannot identify the receivers of smuggled calves".
