President Mary McAleese this evening congratulated Shane Lowry on his remarkable Irish Open win.
The 22-year-old Offaly man became just the third amateur ever to win on the European Tour. He defeated British professional Robert Rock at the third extra hole of a sudden-death play-off after both men finished on 17-under-par 271, two strokes better than Swede Johan Edfors.
“Shane Lowry has shown tremendous determination and talent in the last four days, as he took on and matched some of the best golfers in the world," said Ms McAleese.
Taoiseach Brian Cowen this evening also offered his congratulations to Shane Lowry following his spectacular victory this afternoon.
Mr Cowen, who was in attendence at the event said Lowry's dramatic play-off victory was "a remarkable achievement" and one that everyone in Co Offaly and elswehwere in Ireland would be very proud of.
Meanwhile, Minister for Sport Martin Cullen Lowry, who also attended today's event, described Lowry's win as 'remarkable.'
“ As the leading Irish contender in the Irish Open since play started, this top Irish amateur player has captured the imagination of golfers everywhere. In a challenging contest with a highly competitive field, Shane played with style and determination," said Mr Cullen.
"Even the elements did not deter this young man and his resolve to succeed was resolute. I congratulate him and his proud sporting family on his fantastic achievement, and I wish him every success this year and in future years. Undoubtedly we are going to hear more about Shane Lowry.” he added.
