Police in the North are investigating a suspected arson attack at a school in Ballymoney, Co Antrim last night.

Police in the North are investigating a suspected arson attack at a school in Ballymoney, Co Antrim last night.

The fire at St Bridget’s Primary School, in the Castle Street area of the town, was spotted at around 7 p.m. last night.

The Fire Brigade brought the fire under control and as a result it caused only minor damage to the school.

The police at Ballymoney have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

Detectives removed a number of items from the school for forensic examination.

A spokeswoman at the Ballymoney Borough Council said the town’s mayor was unavailable for comment as he is "out of the province" until tonight.

Attempts to contact the deputy mayor were unsuccessful.

Ballymoney is the town where three Catholic children were burned to death in their home four years ago.

On July 12 1998, the Quinn brothers, Richard (10), Mark (nine) and Jason (seven), were killed when loyalists set fire to their home.
