A two-year-old girl and a man in his 30s have been killed in a stabbing incident in Co Kilkenny.

A two-year-old girl and a man in his 30s have been killed in a stabbing incident in Co Kilkenny.

The girl's body was discovered on the footpath when the Gardaí were called to a house in Callan at around 5 p.m. this evening.

The man was discovered inside the house along with an injured woman, who had also been stabbed.

The woman, thought to be the mother of the child and also in her 30s, was been taken to St Luke’s hospital in Kilkenny where she is said to be in a serious condition.

The circumstances surrounding the attack are unknown.

A police spokeswoman said: "Gardaí were called to a house in Main Street, Callan, Co Kilkenny, where they discovered the body of a two-year-old female on the pavement outside.

"A man in his 30s was discovered inside the house with fatal injuries.

"One female in her 30s was taken to St Luke's Hospital. She is believed to be in a serious condition."

Officers at the scene have sealed the area off pending the arrival of a technical bureau team, which will carry out a preliminary examination of the site.

State pathologist, Dr John Harbison, was called to the house and will conduct a preliminary examination before the bodies are taken to a hospital for a post-mortem examination.
