A Spanish fisherman was being treated in hospital for hypothermia today after his vessel was grounded on rocks off the Kerry coast.

Meanwhile an aerial survey was being carried out to assess the risk of pollution from the Spanish trawler,

Celestial Dawn

, which hit rocks as it attempted to put to sea at Dingle Harbour yesterday.

The Shannon-based Coastguard helicopter is taking harbour officials and Kerry County Council environmental officers on a series of flights over the area to check on the trawler, which is reported to be badly damaged on the port side.

The 10 crewmen were airlifted from the vessel which is badly damaged on the port bow, late last night.

Nine of the men were later released from Tralee General Hospital after treatment for the effects of the cold. The men were treated for hypothermia overnight.

The 15-strong crew of a second Spanish trawler, the Sea Star, arrived safety in Killybegs late last night after the vessel was damaged by hurricane force 12 winds 250 miles off the Donegal coast. None of the crew was injured.
